Zero-Downtime Data Center Zinc Whisker Remediation

How Cleanstar National secured a 40,000 sq. ft. Atlanta telecom hub from a catastrophic, sub-micron hardware threat.

The Challenge: A Catastrophic Hardware Threat

40,000 Sq. Ft. Telecom Data Center, Atlanta, GA

A legacy telecommunications hub in Metro Atlanta noticed a sudden, unexplained spike in power supply failures across their server racks. Upon internal inspection, their IT infrastructure team identified a critical threat lurking beneath their raised floors: Zinc Whiskers.

Over two decades, the galvanized steel underside of the facility’s plenum floor tiles had sprouted microscopic metallic filaments. As the aging facility vibrated, these zinc whiskers broke loose, became airborne, and were sucked directly into server intakes by the under-floor HVAC system—causing immediate, catastrophic micro-shorts on the motherboards. The facility could not be powered down. They needed a vendor capable of remediating the threat without triggering an airborne dust event.

Metric Target Outcome
Facility Size 40,000 Sq. Ft. Raised Floor Completed in 96 Hours
Operational Uptime 100% Zero-Downtime Required 100% Uptime Maintained
Air Quality Goal ISO 14644-1 Class 8 Passed 3rd-Party Laser Audit

Visualizing the Invisible Threat

To understand why standard janitorial services are prohibited in data centers, you must understand the scale of a zinc whisker. A standard commercial vacuum exhausts particles smaller than 10 micrometers straight back into the air—blasting metallic shards into server racks. Interact with this scale to see why true HEPA/ULPA filtration is mandatory.

Key Insight:

A zinc whisker is just 2 micrometers in diameter. That is small enough to bypass standard air filters, but conductive enough to permanently fry a server's motherboard.

The Zero-Downtime Execution Protocol

Remediating zinc whiskers from a live environment requires surgical precision. Cleanstar National deployed a specialized critical-environment team working in rolling shifts to execute our proprietary isolation protocol.

1

Ambient HEPA Scrubbing

Establishing Baseline Control

Before any floor tiles were disturbed, technicians positioned commercial-grade ambient HEPA air scrubbers throughout the zone. This created a localized negative pressure field to capture any rogue particulate immediately.

2

Anti-Static Tile Lifting

ESD-Safe Methodology

Using specialized suction lifters, technicians carefully removed sections of the raised floor tiles in a precise checkerboard pattern. This ensured the structural integrity of the heavy server racks was never compromised and airflow remained stable.

3

HEPA Sub-Floor Remediation

Technicians utilized backpack-mounted HEPA vacuums containing triple-stage filtration to carefully extract the zinc whiskers from the concrete sub-floor, cable trays, and the underside of the galvanized tiles without dispersing them.

4

Chemical Neutralization & Sealing

Once the particulate was removed, the sub-floor and tile structures were wiped down using lint-free cleanroom cloths and a specialized, pH-neutral anti-static (ESD) solution to prevent future metallic buildup and preserve the floor's grounding properties.

The Result: Secured Operations

Critical-Environment Technicians at Work

Following the 96-hour remediation, an independent environmental auditing firm utilized laser particle counters to verify the space. Cleanstar National successfully brought the 40,000 sq. ft. sub-floor into strict ISO 14644-1 Class 8 compliance.

More importantly, the telecom hub reported zero hardware failures related to metallic short-circuiting in the 12 months following our commissioning, securing their multi-million dollar infrastructure.
